Work on setting up a "tent city" by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to help the earthquake victims will hopefully start in two days.

LCCI Vice-President Aftab Vohra, talking to Business Recorder here on Sunday, said: "We are installing 300 tents at Raiwind Road, out of which 100 tents have already reached Lahore, while another 200 tents are expected to reach in two to three days. These tents are already lying on the border (Wagha), but could not be transported to the city due to absence of transport and manpower shortage because of Eid holidays".

He said 1,000 tents had already been imported from India by various businessmen awaiting distribution out of which 100 belong to the LCCI, while the shipment lying at Wagha for the last three days also consisted of 1,000 tents, out of which 200 were reserved for LCCI Tent City.

Vohra said they expected work on setting up that temporary tent city, where 300 earthquake families would be given a six-month shelter, would be completed in a seven to 10-day time.

The LCCI office-bearer said that those injured in recent tremor including their family members after getting initial treatment and discharged from the hospitals but still needing some rest would be accommodated in this temporary tent city. "This would also help saving these displaced families from the coming winter season," he added.

He said the LCCI had estimated that on average a family would consist over six members to be placed in tents. Vohra concluded that they would be seeking help from the Punjab government to help the deserving families.
